The history of old beams – from the Middle Ages to today

The history of reclaimed beams goes back to the early Middle Ages – to a time when houses were built with hand-crafted wooden beams. Each of these old beams was hewn by hand, often reused over generations and shaped by the marks of time. Back then, wood was a valuable building material whose reuse was taken for granted – long before sustainability became a modern trend.

Today, exactly such historical beams are cleaned, brushed and professionally refurbished to preserve their unique appeal while making them usable for new construction and interior projects. The combination of original craftsmanship and modern processing gives every piece of reclaimed wood its special character.

Where do reclaimed beams come from?

Every refurbished reclaimed beam we hold in our hands today tells a rich and fascinating story. Before it was cleaned, brushed and reworked for modern projects, it once served as a load-bearing structure in barns, farmhouses or historic buildings.

Many of these old beams come from the Alpine region – from Austria, Bavaria and regions of the former monarchy. The buildings they were salvaged from are often several hundred years old. This means the timber used can be even older. Just imagine the stories a reused wooden beam could tell – from the carpenters who once hewed it to the families who lived under its protection.

Refurbished reclaimed beams are far more than a building material – they are witnesses to traditional craftsmanship. The patina preserved through gentle brushing and cleaning brings their history impressively to life. By refurbishing these old beams today and integrating them into new spaces, we preserve not only their beauty, but also the spirit of bygone times.

What types of reclaimed beams are there?

In our extensive collection you’ll find reclaimed beams refurbished in different ways, especially spruce and oak. Careful brushing, cleaning and reworking highlights the natural beauty of each wood species – and prepares it for new uses.

Refurbished spruce beams stand out for their warm, light colour and lively grain. Often originating from traditional Alpine houses and farm buildings, these beams have been cleaned and brushed by us so their original charm is shown to best effect. They are ideal for projects that call for a natural yet refined look.

Brushed oak beams are known for their great strength, durability and darker, characterful appearance. These beams were mostly used in half-timbered houses or historic farmsteads. After gentle cleaning and refurbishing they impress with depth, texture and timeless elegance.

Whether you prefer lighter, brushed spruce or robust, refurbished oak – with us you’ll find reclaimed beams finished with careful craftsmanship. Each beam is processed so its history remains visible – and at the same time is ready for new tasks in designing interiors and outdoor areas.

How are reclaimed beams refurbished?

The beauty of our refurbished reclaimed beams doesn’t happen overnight. It is the result of a carefully planned and executed process that transforms every piece of oak and spruce from its original building into a finished, hand-hewn reclaimed beam, ready for your next projects.

The process begins with the careful deconstruction of old buildings. Instead of simply demolishing them, we take the time to dismantle them gently in order to preserve the quality and integrity of the old wooden beams, both oak and spruce.

After deconstruction comes sorting. In our facility the reclaimed beams are sorted by quality, thickness and length. This is an important step to ensure we make the most of the potential of each individual beam.
Next, the old wooden beams are thoroughly cleaned. Centuries-old dust is carefully removed, nails and metal parts are tracked down with metal detectors and professionally removed.

After cleaning, treatment follows: the cleaned reclaimed beams are heat-treated and dried according to the ISPM15 standard in our in-house kiln to permanently free them from pests – an essential step for later use.
Then comes brushing: with special nylon brushes we brush the surface of the beams, bringing out the warm brown tone while preserving the characteristic patina. This creates the typical, gently brushed texture of refurbished reclaimed beams.

Finally, after the reclaimed beams have been refurbished, they are cut to the desired length according to our customers’ requirements, measured and photographed. They are then prepared and packaged for transport to the customer, ready to become part of your next construction or renovation projects.
From the first dismantling to the last brush stroke: every cleaned and refurbished reclaimed beam – whether old oak or spruce – goes through our comprehensive refurbishment process to ensure that it is not only beautiful, but also durable and safe in your application.

What are the advantages of refurbished reclaimed beams?

Brushed and refurbished reclaimed beams – whether spruce or oak – bring numerous advantages that make them the ideal choice for architects, builders and craftspeople. Here are some reasons why using cleaned and refined reclaimed beams is worthwhile in your projects:

1. Unmistakable aesthetics: Reclaimed wood has a patina that cannot be replicated. The warm brown tones, visible signs of use and distinctive grain lend any space in which it is used irresistible charm and character. Whether you buy old oak beams or use spruce beams, you create a design that is both timeless and unique.

2. Environmental friendliness with reclaimed wood: Using reclaimed wood is an excellent way to conserve resources and protect our planet. By reusing existing wood instead of cutting new timber, you help protect forests and reduce your project’s carbon footprint.

3. Durability and stability: Brushed reclaimed beams are not only beautiful; they are also extremely robust. Over the years they have developed a hardness and stability that younger wood often lacks. These beams have already been through a lot and are ready to last for many more years.

4. Versatility of reclaimed wood: Reclaimed wood can be used in a wide variety of projects, from rustic to modern designs. Whether you are renovating a traditional chalet or designing a modern urban loft, brushed reclaimed beams can be integrated into your design to add warmth and character.

5. Historical value: Every reused reclaimed beam carries a story within it. When you integrate reclaimed wood into your project, you bring in a piece of history that sparks conversation and creates a sense of connection with the past.

Choosing reclaimed wood is not just an aesthetic or eco-friendly decision. It is an investment in quality, durability and history. Whether you buy old oak beams or prefer spruce beams, you’re investing in a material that has stood the test of time and will continue to live on in your projects.

How should reclaimed beams be maintained?

Reclaimed wood is a natural material that is both robust and ages gracefully. And even though reclaimed wood is known for being low-maintenance, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you preserve its beauty and durability. Here are some useful notes on maintaining reclaimed beams and rafters.

1. Minimal cleaning: The truth is that reclaimed beams are very easy to maintain. A soft, dry cloth or a gentle brush is all you need to remove dust and dirt from your beams. And the best part? You only need to do this rarely.

2. Moisture control: Like any timber, reclaimed wood reacts to fluctuations in humidity. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in rooms where reclaimed elements are installed to avoid moisture damage.

3. Pest control: Our old posts are treated according to the international ISPM15 standard to render any pests harmless. Nevertheless, it is important to check your reclaimed wood regularly for signs of infestation.

4. Natural treatments: Do not use aggressive chemicals or solvents to clean or treat reclaimed wood. These can damage the surface and impair the natural colour and texture of the wood.

Maintaining reclaimed beams is straightforward – another reason for their appeal. With minimal maintenance, reclaimed wood can preserve its unique history and rustic aesthetic for generations.
