What are hand-hewn boards?
Hand-hewn boards come from old wooden structures such as log walls or roof trusses, where the surface was worked by hand. The typical hewn structure is created by working with the broad axe – and it is precisely these marks that make each piece unique.
Our hand-hewn wooden boards are carefully sorted and prepared. They are available either with a tongue-and-groove system for a solid connection or trimmed smooth if a reduced, clean look is desired. Thanks to thermal treatment according to ISPM 15, the boards are free of pests and ready for immediate use – ideal for walls and ceilings in interior spaces.
As standard, we deliver our hand-hewn spruce boards in the natural mixed width between 6 and 20 cm – this creates a lively, varied look on the wall. For a calmer look, choose fixed widths: you can select from 4 to 6 fixed dimensions (e.g. 8, 10, 12, 14 cm), creating an even, modern installation pattern with precise butt joints.
What to design with hand-hewn spruce?
Hand-hewn wooden boards are versatile – suitable for both interior finishing and outdoor areas. Their striking hewn wood surface brings character to any wall or ceiling cladding. Indoors, hand-hewn spruce boards create a warm, rustic atmosphere as an accent wall or ceiling cladding. Outdoors, they serve as a robust façade solution with rustic charm. The natural feel and look make hand-hewn wood a stylish, durable alternative for a wide range of design projects.
Whether modern or traditional: Hand-hewn reclaimed wood boards blend harmoniously into a wide variety of architectural styles. Particularly exciting in combination with materials such as concrete, glass, or steel. The brushed and hewn surface is easy to maintain and naturally continues to change over time. Thanks to custom cutting options, we deliver hand-hewn boards exactly to size – for easy installation and a perfect final result.
How to correctly install hand-hewn boards?
Installing hand-hewn wooden boards starts with a stable substructure made of wooden battens. These are mounted across the desired installation direction on the wall – horizontally for vertical cladding, and vice versa. In more humid areas such as bathrooms or basements, good rear ventilation is important. This is achieved by vertical battens between the wall and the hand-hewn spruce boards, ensuring air circulation.
Once the substructure is mounted, the hand-hewn boards are gradually fixed in place. Start at the bottom or top – depending on orientation. There are several options for fixing:
- Wire nails: inconspicuous and simple fastening
- Angled nailing or screwing: no visible fastening head for a clean look
- Boarding clips (with tongue & groove): invisible fixing without damaging the wood
This creates a clean surface without visible fastenings. A step-by-step guide for processing our hand-hewn boards can be found here in our installation instructions.
Buying hand-hewn boards – A sustainable decision
Our hand-hewn boards stand for sustainable wood use with history. Instead of using fresh wood, we rely on old construction timber – for example from historic barns, farmhouses, or roof trusses. There, the surfaces were originally worked by hand with the broad axe. This traditional processing creates a hewn wood surface that is now valued as a distinctive design element.
Each board tells its own story through its structure – with natural signs of use, weathering, and a unique patina. When you buy hand-hewn boards, you receive a product with real substance: sustainable and distinctive. Whether for wall cladding, ceilings, or creative applications – a wall made of hewn wood brings warmth, authenticity, and character to any project.
How to dry hand-hewn spruce boards?
Our hand-hewn boards are treated in a modern drying kiln to reliably reduce the wood moisture content to 12–14%. This ensures stability, protection against deformation, and guarantees pest freedom according to ISPM 15 standard. This way you receive boards with a hewn surface that not only convince visually but are also immediately ready for use – whether for interior finishing or a hewn wood wall.
It is important to emphasize: Hewn wood works – small cracks or natural changes in shape are signs of authenticity and not defects. Due to gentle drying, the distinctive structure is preserved while the material becomes durable and resistant. Those who want to buy hand-hewn boards will receive genuine reclaimed wood with character and technical reliability.
How to Care for a Hand-Hewn Reclaimed Wood Board?
Hand-hewn boards with their original surface are especially low-maintenance and durable. The distinctive texture is preserved without any special care – ideal for those who buy hand-hewn boards and want to use long-lasting materials for walls or ceilings.
For cleaning, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient to remove dust or light dirt. Thanks to their robust surface, hand-hewn boards are also suitable for wall cladding outdoors, without the need for additional treatment. This way, the natural patina of the hand-hewn surface is permanently preserved.
Important Product Note:
When you buy hand-hewn boards, you are acquiring a living natural material with history. Like any genuine reclaimed wood, a hand-hewn surface reacts to changes in air humidity with natural shrinkage or expansion. These processes are typical for wood and do not represent a defect. Hand-hewn spruce boards may vary slightly in dimensions, color, and structure. Cracks, nail holes, discolorations, and other traces of previous use are typical features of these boards with a hand-hewn surface. They make every hand-hewn wood wall unique. During processing, small wood splinters may come loose – therefore careful handling is recommended.
