Reclaimed wood without woodworms – How it works
At Brenners Altholz, we place great importance on ensuring that our reclaimed wood is free from pests and woodworms. That’s why we give you an insight into our careful process to guarantee that you receive only the best reclaimed wood for your projects.
The Process of Reclaimed Wood Heat Treatment
The reclaimed wood that we use for our diverse products, such as reclaimed wall cladding, reclaimed boards, and reclaimed beams, is heat-treated in our in-house wood drying chamber. This process ensures that any pests that might be present in the wood are effectively eliminated. Our heat treatment complies with the ISPM15 standard, which requires the wood to be heated to a core temperature of at least 56 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 30 minutes.
What is ISPM15?
ISPM15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is a standard that sets specific requirements for the heat treatment of wood to prevent the spread of pests. Although we do not sell packaging wood, we follow this standard to ensure the highest safety and quality.
During heat treatment, we monitor the process using intelligent control technology and modern heat sensors inside the wood. These sensors ensure that the required temperature is reached and maintained to effectively eliminate all pests. Each procedure is thoroughly documented and the data securely stored, so it can be accessed later if necessary. This is a safe, transparent, and environmentally friendly method to guarantee that our reclaimed wood is completely pest-free.
The Drying of Reclaimed Wood
For the heat treatment process, our reclaimed wood, whether old boards or reclaimed beams, is stacked in packages, with each layer separated by spacer battens. This allows warm air to flow from all sides, ensuring uniform drying and heat treatment. During this process, it may occasionally happen that resin seeps from the wood as it becomes liquid through the heat. This is a natural part of the drying process.
The energy required for heat treatment comes from burning residual wood. In this way, we sustainably use our resources and minimize our ecological footprint.

The Wormholes in Reclaimed Wood
Wormholes in Reclaimed Wood
A common feature of reclaimed wood is wormholes. These wormholes are a natural part of the wood and contribute to the unique character and history of the material. They give reclaimed wood an authentic and rustic appearance that is highly appreciated.
Thanks to our thorough heat treatment, we can guarantee at the time of delivery that these wormholes pose no danger. All potential pests are eliminated by the high temperature, ensuring that the wood is completely safe and ready for use in your projects.
Regular inspections by the plant protection authority
As a company, we are inspected annually by the plant protection authority to ensure that we comply with the requirements of the ISPM15 standard. Both the documentation and the technical conditions are checked. This ensures that our procedures always meet the highest standards.
